The most famous newspaper publisher of them all - William Randolph Hearst - was a noted fancier of dachshunds. You can read his elegy to his toy dachshund, Helen, here. You cannot, however, visit Helen's home at Hearst Castle atop the Enchanted Hill on California's Pacific Highway 1 with your dog. No dogs allowed in La Cuesta Encantada. Your beach-loving dog can explore William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach at the foot of the castle, below the small bluffs on the other side of the highway. She'll have so much fun you won't ever catch her looking wistfully up the hill at the 115-room La Casa Grande.
