There is still at least a month until the summer tourists abandon the ocean and lake beaches and we can once again go with our dogs. But if your dog is hankering for a sandy beach now, consider river beaches. If you live near a big, tidal river you can probably find a good sandy beach but you can find them in unexpected places as well. There is a small creek on a trail we use that makes a hard right turn and inside the elbow is a sandy beach wider than the stream itself.
My favorite river beach is at Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey on the Delaware River. It is wide enough to have firm sand at the water's edge for walking and soft, dog-digging sand above the waterline. There is an abundance of driftwood for a spirited game of fetch and the waves are frisky enough to challenge any dog. And, of course, dogs are allowed year-round.
