This massive dome of pink granite is considered a batholith - an underground rock formation uncovered by erosion. It is one of the largest batholiths in America. When it came time to build the impressive Texas state capitol in Austin, pink granite from here, 18 miles north of Fredericksburg, was used.
The climb to the top of the 425-foot Enchanted Rock is mostly up bare rock and waiting on top for you and your dog are panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country, all flat with scattered oak, Texas persimmon and prickly pear laid out in front of you. A route up the side of the rock is more or less marked out but you can fan out and find your own way to the summit. Anyway you do it, allow about 15-20 minutes for your dog to conquer Enchanted Rock.
When you get bak down take your dog along the 4-mile loop trail that winds around the granite formations in Echo Canyon. Come early on weekends - the popular Enchanted Rock State Natural Area can fill up before noon.
